Atlantic Menhaden Catch Cut 20% for 2026

The Atlantic States MFC has reduced the 2026 Atlantic menhaden total allowable catch to 184,840 metric tons—a 20% cut from 233,550 mt. The reduction follows new ecological reference points designed to ensure adequate forage for striped bass and other predators. The reduction is widely supported by recreational anglers, who have called for even greater cuts.

While the stock isn't overfished, fishing mortality exceeds the target and fecundity is below target levels. The Board chose a moderate cut to minimize economic impact while gathering stakeholder feedback before setting 2027-2029 quotas.

Additionally, ASMFC is considering reducing the Chesapeake Bay reduction fishery cap by up to 50% to address localized depletion concerns affecting pound net fisheries. For more, visit www.asmfc.org.
