Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Free Fishing Day Guide for June 6

Free Fishing Day

Free Fishing Day is coming up fast. To help you celebrate, TPWD offers resources to provide fun, high-quality fishing opportunities for anglers of all skill levels and ages.

To make the most of Saturday, June 6, here is your guide to getting started and finding the best spots:

  • Find a Place to Fish Close to Home: Whether you prefer flowing rivers or quiet lakes, our Lake Finder and River Fishing pages help you find access points to over 150 lakes and many rivers across the state.
  • Go Fishing in the City: Our Neighborhood Fishin' lakes offer urban access for the whole family, with 18 locations statewide (including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio) stocked with channel catfish.
  • Saltwater Fishing from a Pier: Enjoy the coast without a boat! Public, wheelchair-accessible fishing piers are available in every bay system for a great family day out.
  • Go Kayak Fishing: Explore 91 official Texas Paddling Trails or utilize our Leased River Access sites for a unique angling adventure.
  • Fish in a State Park: While June 6 is the statewide free day, fishing is actually complementary year-round at some Texas State Parks! Also, make sure to check the event calendar for special Free Fishing Day activities at parks like Kerrville-Schriener Park and Lake Arrowhead.
  • Teach someone new to fish: Why not share the fun and take someone new to fishing with you? Free fishing day is the perfect opportunity.
  • Fishing 101: New to the sport? Learn the basics, from safety and gear to baiting and cleaning your catch, with tips and videos on our Learn to Fish webpage.

Love the experience? Consider the Year-from-Purchase All-Water Fishing Package. It's a great value for residents, covering both fresh and salt water for a full year from the date you buy it.
