Precision Trolling on the Great Lakes Starts with Cannon Downriggers

Lake Ontario charter captain Richard Hajecki relies on Cannon Optimum downriggers, Humminbird electronics and the One-Boat Network to stay efficient and dialed on constantly changing water.

RACINE, W.I.  – On the vast open waters of the Great Lakes, success depends on efficiency, precision, and the ability to act on real-time information. For veteran Lake Ontario charter captain Richard Hajecki, that starts with the Cannon® Optimum™ downriggers, integrated with Humminbird® electronics and the Minn Kota® One-Boat Network®. Together, the connected system helps him locate bait, monitor water conditions and make fast depth and speed adjustments directly from one connected system.

A full-time guide since 2007, with more than 40 years of experience fishing Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, Hajecki relies on his deep understanding of seasonal fish behavior and changing patterns. He also relies on a connected system of Cannon downriggers and Humminbird electronics to stay on active fish across constantly changing conditions. Whether targeting offshore salmon and steelhead or shallow-water brown trout, his ability to efficiently locate fish and precisely present baits is critical to tournament success and putting clients on fish day after day.

Hajecki, owner of Crazy Yankee Sportfishing, runs two boats: a Smokercraft Phantom rigged with three Humminbird XPLORE™ units and a 36-foot Tiara rigged with five Humminbird SOLIX® G3 units. On the Smokercraft, he runs two 10-inch units at the helm and a 12-inch unit on the transom. On the Tiara, he runs two 12-inch units and one 10-inch unit at the helm, plus two 10-inch units on a custom transom plate mounted between the Cannon base and swivel base. Both setups give him precise control over multiple downrigger baits running simultaneously, while maintaining boat positioning, depth control, and the ability to adapt as conditions change.

Finding Fish Fast

On massive fisheries like Lake Ontario, covering water efficiently is one of the biggest keys to success. Bait and fish are constantly moving, water conditions change by the hour, and locating active fish quickly can make or break a trip. For Hajecki, that process begins behind the wheel with Humminbird fish finders scanning below the surface, while Cannon downriggers stand ready to capitalize as soon as fish are found.

"Everything starts with the Humminbird units," said Hajecki. "I'm running both XPLORE and SOLIX models on different boats, and using them constantly while covering water to locate bait and mark fish. Once I find them, the Cannon downriggers let me put bait exactly where it needs to be and stay efficient throughout the entire process."

Hajecki uses Humminbird electronics to identify fish and bait at speeds exceeding 20 mph, utilizing High Wide transducers capable of marking fish at even faster speeds across expansive offshore water. During the summer months, salmon and rainbow trout roam open water chasing pelagic baitfish, making the ability to quickly locate activity and efficiently set up presentations critical to success.

For shallow-water brown trout applications, Side Imaging has become an increasingly important tool as changing forage patterns continue to shift fish positioning. Clean bottom transitions, isolated rocks, and subtle hard-bottom changes often hold feeding fish, and identifying those high-percentage areas allows Hajecki to stay productive.

"With invasive gobies becoming more common in our waters, brown trout are relating heavily to rock and hard-bottom areas," Hajecki explained. "Side Imaging has become even more impactful for finding those cleaner bottom transitions. Once I identify productive water,, I am able to pivot to that bite as needed when the brown trout move shallow."

Precise Presentations and Real-Time Adjustments

Once fish are located, Hajecki deploys Cannon Optimum Downriggers as the foundation of presentation control. With probes spaced throughout the downrigger spread to monitor thermocline depth, water temperature, and trolling speed, the Humminbird displays provide constant real-time feedback for immediate, precise adjustments.

By monitoring changing conditions throughout the day, Hajecki can keep baits running efficiently in productive water. Whether adjusting trolling speed, modifying spread depth, or repositioning presentations around active fish, having real-time information available throughout the boat allows him to react instead of guess.

"I put the downriggers right where I'm seeing fish on the graph," said Hajecki. "If fish are shallow, I stay shallow. If they're deeper, I'll stagger presentations above, near, and below them until the fish tell me exactly what they want. From there, it's about making the most of bite windows, and adjusting based on feedback from the fish and the conditions."

One of the biggest advantages of the Cannon Optimum system is its ease of use. Features like programmable depth presets, adjustable retrieve speeds, and the Last Depth function allow Hajecki to quickly reset productive presentations without wasting valuable time between bites.

"We'll hook a fish, hit auto-up on the downrigger, fight and land the fish, and then quickly send that bait right back to the exact same depth where we just got bit," said Hajecki. "That Last Depth feature is a complete game changer, especially when things get busy with clients and multiple lines in the water. It lets us capitalize on the bite when fish are positioned."

The ability to fine-tune retrieve speed is also important when fishing delicate presentations such as meat rigs, where slower, more controlled retrieves help maintain bait integrity and improve efficiency around the boat. Beyond individual product performance, Hajecki says the true advantage comes from connecting every major system through the One-Boat Network.

By integrating Cannon downriggers, Humminbird electronics and the One-Boat Network boat control into a connected platform, Hajecki can monitor trolling speed, depth, temperature, and spread positioning in real time while making immediate adjustments as conditions change.

"Having everything connected changes the way I fish," said Hajecki. "I can instantly look at my Humminbird units and know exactly what my speed is, where my spread is running, and what the fish are doing. It eliminates guesswork and helps me stay efficient all day long."

That efficiency becomes even more important on dynamic fisheries like the Great Lakes, where fish positioning, water conditions, and feeding behavior can change rapidly throughout the day. Speed matters, timing matters and controlling the controllable can be the difference between a tough day on the boat and putting a smile on the clients' faces.
