The Conservation Angler is grateful to be a 2026 grantee of The Flyfisher Foundation, whose support is helping us launch an ambitious new angler science effort on the Klamath River.
Removal of four dams from the Klamath reopened hundreds of miles of historic salmon and steelhead habitat, creating an extraordinary opportunity to document the reestablishment of anadromy and steelhead in the upper Klamath Basin.
TCA is working with Cal Trout, state and federal agencies, and tribal partners to employ guides and anglers as scientists and help document what happens next.
Participating guides and anglers will collect scale samples, tissue samples, measurements, photographs, and other biological information from steelhead and rainbow trout throughout the basin. These data will help us distinguish steelhead from resident rainbow trout, document the reestablishment of anadromy, track age and life history diversity, evaluate population structure, and measure changes through time.
Put simply, we are turning anglers into scientists and putting their time on the water to work for wild fish.
Support from The Flyfisher Foundation is helping pay for sampling equipment, processing of scale samples, field implementation, and scientific analysis. We are grateful for their investment in TCA and in the recovery of wild steelhead in the Klamath Basin.
That is also why we are pleased to help spread the word about the Flyfishers' Club of Oregon Annual Auction on September 26 in Portland. Proceeds from the event help The Flyfisher Foundation support conservation organizations and projects like ours.

TCA Senior Scientist Nick Chambers will be there to give a short presentation on our Klamath work and what we have learned to date. The Annual Auction brings together people who share a deep appreciation for wild fish, cold clean water, and the extraordinary rivers of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
