Michigan Introduces Bill to Restrict the Use of Lead Tackle
On September 23, Michigan lawmakers introduced HB 6345, legislation that would restrict the sale and use of lead fishing tackle in state waters. The bill would ban the sale and use of sinkers containing one ounce or less of lead, as well as lead-containing jigs measuring under 1.5 inches.
Notably, the restrictions proposed in HB 6345 exceed restrictions enacted in several New England states. Beyond sinkers and jigs, the bill would prohibit other fishing tackle containing lead, regardless of size. These restrictions could affect tackle ranging from lead-core line to weighted hooks and hard baits containing lead components.
ASA and our partners will continue working with elected officials, the Michigan DNR and anglers in the state to protect access to affordable fishing tackle and advance science-based fisheries management.
