Ohioans Celebrate National Safe Boating Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As Ohioans prepare to hit the water this summer, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft is joining the nationwide observance of National Safe Boating Week, Saturday, May 17 through Friday, May 23. This annual campaign launches the global Safe Boating Campaign, which encourages boaters everywhere to be prepared, stay alert, and make safety a top priority on the water.

"We want every boater in Ohio to enjoy their time on the water and make it back to shore safely,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “Wearing a life jacket, knowing the rules of the water, and staying alert are all simple steps that can save lives."

National Safe Boating Week will take place Saturday, May 17 through Friday, May 23.

According to U.S. Coast Guard data, drowning accounts for 75% of recreational boating deaths—and 87% of those victims were not wearing a life jacket. Last year in Ohio, there were 16 deaths related to recreational boating. Only two victims were known to be wearing a personal flotation device (PFD).

Boaters are encouraged to:

  • Wear a life jacket: Choose one that’s U.S. Coast Guard approved, fits properly, and suits your activity.
  • Take a boating safety course: Build confidence with training for all experience levels.
  • Make a float plan: Tell someone on shore where you’re going and when you’ll return.
  • Use an engine cut-off switch: It’s required by law and stops your boat if you fall overboard.
  • Stay alert—conditions can change quickly. Check the weather:
  • Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Stay sober:
  • Stay connected: Bring at least one waterproof communication device, like a VHF radio or waterproof cell phone.

Life Jacket Safety: Start the Season with an Inspection
Before your first trip of the season, take time to inspect your life jackets. The Division of Parks and Watercraft and the BoatUS Foundation both recommend checking the straps are in good shape and that there are no\ rips or tears. Make sure the U.S. Coast Guard approval label is legible. For inflatable life jackets, manually inflate and leave them overnight to test for leaks.
