A Car-Toppable Jetski

Swedish start-up Roxen Innovations has created a lightweight electric PWC by pairing jetski performance with RIB-style stability – all in a package light enough to lift onto a car roof.

Personal watercraft are a fun, accessible way to get on the water. Still, their weight usually means relying on a road trailer, along with the compliance and servicing that go with it. Roxen tackles this by using ultra-light composite construction and a compact electric drivetrain to produce a 57kg PWC that can be hoisted onto standard roof racks. For transport, the 33kg battery is removed and carried in the vehicle. It’s modular and swappable, so that owners can bring a spare for longer sessions.

Founded in 2021 by three entrepreneurs, Roxen Innovations focuses on sustainable, lightweight electric craft. The PWC uses two removable buoyancy tubes alongside a minimalist 2.49m x 1.25m hull, with stripped-back controls including bicycle-style handlebars. The first prototype was trialled in 2023 and reportedly outperformed expectations.

A 22kW (30hp) electric motor drives a waterjet for a top speed of 30 knots, with a cruising speed of 15–20 knots. The 5.5kWh battery delivers around 75 minutes of typical use and 15–20nm of range, recharging in 2–3 hours on a standard 240V supply. Despite its simplicity, the craft includes 4G connectivity, GPS logging, remote diagnostics and over-the-air updates. Features such as geofencing make it attractive to low-cost rental operators.

The Roxen debuted at Sweden’s largest boat show in 2024, where it won Innovation of the Year. The initial production run has sold out, and the company plans to scale up to 200 units in 2026 while seeking investment for future models.
