Washington D.C. - The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is pleased to see the National Fish Habitat Partnership (NFHP) program assist in providing more than $23.4 million to support 53 fish habitat conservation projects in 29 states. Collaborative partnerships between the state fish and wildlife agencies, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tribes, nongovernmental organizations, and other partners are key to implementing these conservation priority projects.

“The National Fish Habitat Partnership funds are leveraged to address the nation’s biggest ?sh habitat challenges,” said Judy Camuso, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and President of the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies. “The Association is pleased to be one of many partners coordinating to conserve and address the nation’s biggest fish habitat challenges.”

"Annually, the National Fish Habitat Partnership focuses on putting priority conservation projects on-the-ground through partnerships, which benefit both fish and the American people," said Tim Schaeffer, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Chair of the National Fish Habitat Board. "These locally-driven projects are designed to leave a conservation legacy for the protection, restoration and enhancement of fish habitat for future generations to enjoy in the outdoors."

The National Fish Habitat Partnership’s (NFHP) mission is to protect, restore and enhance the nation’s fish and aquatic communities through partnerships that foster fish habitat conservation and improve the quality of life for the American people. Since 2006, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has provided over $65.6 million to conservation projects which leveraged at a 5:1 ratio to provide over $335 million in funding support for ?sh habitat conservation projects that improve angling and recreational opportunities across the nation. NFHP’s conservation projects have reconnected more than 9,800 miles of rivers and streams while conserving over 70,000 acres of river, lake, riparian, upland, estuary and wetland habitat.

About the National Fish Habitat Partnership:
Since 2006, NFHP has supported over 1,500 projects benefiting ?sh habitat throughout all 50 states. This e?ort works to conserve ?sh habitat nationwide, leveraging federal, state, tribal, and private funding resources to achieve the greatest e?ect on ?sh populations through priority conservation projects of 20 Fish Habitat Partnerships that are organized around key ?sh species, geographic areas, or important ?sh habitats. In 2020, NFHP was recognized by Congress as part of the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Act and was reauthorized in 2024 through passage of the America's Conservation Enhancement Reauthorization Act. The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies and the National Fish Habitat Partnership Program:
The National Fish Habitat Action Plan is an unprecedented attempt to address an unseen crisis for fish nationwide: loss and degradation of their watery homes. The plan was born in 2001 when an ad hoc group supported by the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council explored the notion of developing a partnership effort for fish on the scale of what was done for waterfowl in the 1980s through the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. The waterfowl plan has worked wonders during the past two decades to boost waterfowl populations by forming strong local and regional partnerships to protect key habitats. The Association supports staffing for the National Fish Habitat Partnership and plays a key role in the Executive Leadership Team of the Board. The National Fish Habitat Board is also comprised of members from states and regional AFWA Associations.
