DAIWA Coastal TW 200 Baitcaster Ready for Big Fish

FOOTHILL RANCH, CA – Sometimes, your typical-sized baitcasting reel isn’t enough – the lures are simply too large. And the potential catch? Let’s just say a palmable 80-size reel is under gunned for streaking 40-some-inch yellows off the Cali coast. Or a redfish of the same proportions going the wrong way on the Gulf of America’s intercoastal.

A 100-size baitcaster gets you closer, but is still undermanned. A 150 will cut the muster, but there’s still a higher and better rung. So, why not come to the gunfight with a gun? Might we suggest DAIWA’s new 2025 COASTAL TW 200

It’s a beast of baitcaster and born for bigger baits. “Think topwaters, jigs, larger swimbaits, and jerkbaits,” said DAIWA Field Marketing Manager, Chris Martin, about what to chunk with the new COASTAL TW 200. “A couple perfectly teamed DAIWA baits that come to mind are the new FASHAD 100S and Laser Impact Switch Hitter. Both carry some heft and are fish catching machines.”

Beyond its fortitude to orchestrate larger lures, the COASTAL TW 200’s deeper spool also accommodates more and heavier line. “You can load it up with 150 yards of 20-pound monofilament or fluorocarbon, or 150 yards of 40-pound braid, like J-BRAID Grand x8, or even more yardage of 30-pound XBRAID Sinking SS112,” said Martin.

At the core of the COASTAL TW 200’s immaculate design is DAIWA’s exclusive HYPERDRIVE® System. “It starts with our HYPER Armed Housing,” explained Martin. “Durable, lightweight, precision tooled, and corrosion-resistant aluminium frame and sideplate provide a protective shell for our widely praised HYPDERDRIVE DIGIGEAR.”

Martin continued, “The aluminum HYPER Armed Housing prevents any warping or binding under load of the gears, bearings, bushings and all the moving parts to promise a smooth performance.”

The COASTAL TW 200’s above-mentioned HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR is truly a modern marvel. Martin elaborated, “It’s remarkably smooth because of the system’s three point interaction between the pinion and drive gear, which maintains continuous gear contact and spreads the load to eliminate chatter and extend the life of the reel. With HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR, a reel will last twice as long as any other reel in its price-range.”

Another novel move DAIWA made on the new COASTAL TW 200 was replacing the key bearings with precision ceramic and composite bushings to enhance durability and life of the reel. The downfall of bushings used in reels of yesteryear was the decrease in casting distance. Not so with the COASTAL TW 200… “Here, the spool is supported by a bearing easy to service for maximum casting distance. That wasn’t the case with other brands and models who went the all-bushings route. The spool simply couldn’t rotate properly.” explained Martin.

So why mess with bushings at all? “Bushings don’t corrode,” said Martin. “Their longevity is the utmost, even when exposed to saltwater. The COASTAL TW 200 is engineered to be with you for a very long time.”

Martin closed by showcasing a feature that doesn’t necessarily improve operation, but undoubtedly enhances the total fishing experience. “We added a soft clicker to the drag,” Martin said with a smirk and wink. “Anglers are integrating aftermarket drag clickers for live bait fishing, as well as for the pure enjoyment of hearing a fish peel line. The factory drag clicker on the COASTAL TW 200 produces a soft but audible click that says you’re into one, and there’s a battle underway. That’s pretty cool…”

COASTAL TW 200 FEATURES

HYPERDRIVE ARMED HOUSING and SIDEPLATE

A distortion-proof aluminum frame that securely encases the gear unit within the reel body. This robust housing ensures the gears remain precisely aligned, enhancing the reel's performance, durability, and longevity under stress.

HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR

An advanced DAIWA technology that makes gear teeth more efficient at transferring power from the handle to the spool, resulting in a smoother, more powerful gear set that also reduces gear noise. The gears are also strengthened by larger teeth in the traction wheel. HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR also features three points of contact – most gearing has only two – which maintains constant contact between the gear teeth, resulting in a smoother operation, improved cranking power, and longer gear life.

HYPERDRIVE TOUGH CLUTCH

DAIWA’s redeveloped and reinforced clutch mechanism is engineered to be more durable, stronger, and more reliable than previous versions, ensuring consistent performance even under heavy use or harsh conditions, such as saltwater fishing. It provides a crisp and satisfying engagement with an audible click and is designed to withstand thousands of casts without failure.

T-WING SYSTEM (TWS)

DAIWA’s innovative “T” shaped mechanical aperture that the line passes through when casting and retrieving allows the line to flow freely, reducing friction and sharp angles that slow line flow. When the clutch is disengaged for casting, TWS pivots to a wide, open position, allowing line to spool off with minimal friction to reduce backlashes and enable longer, more accurate casts. During retrieval, TWS pivots back to a narrower position, guiding the line evenly onto the spool to prevent tangling and ensure consistent packing for subsequent casts.

ZERO ADJUSTER

The spool tension knob comes ideally preset at the factory to match the model and reduce backlash when casting into the wind, skipping baits, or with lighter lures. However, anglers can fine tune the spool tension to their personal preferences.

LC (Long Cast) Concept

DAIWA’s LC Concept focuses on enhancing casting distance through a specialized spool design, reduced friction, and optimized braking. The concept prioritizes lightweight construction, large spool diameters, and specific spool geometries to maximize casting efficiency, especially during the final stages of the cast, and is engineered for use with midsized to large lures.

MAGFORCE Cast Control

DAIWA’s masterpiece magnetic braking system reduces backlash and improves casting performance for midsize to large lures. Magnets in the reel's side plates apply constant and controlled braking pressure to the spool, preventing overrun during casts. As you start a cast and the spool approaches maximum speed, the spool's rotor is kicked out towards the magnets, creating a smooth braking pressure to prevent backlash.

WATERPROOF ATD (Automatic Tournament Drag)

DAIWA’s ATD uses an improved drag grease with low viscosity at rest that becomes more viscous upon drag startup, reducing initial inertia for a smoother response from the hook up. Structural changes to the spool metal provide greater support across the main shaft, minimizing spool twist under load, promoting even pressure on drag washers, and reducing drag pulses to enhance durability and control. A special grommet is added to the COASTAL TW 200’S ATD to make the drag system waterproof.

100mm SWEPT HANDLE

Designed to enhance cranking power, comfort, and aesthetics, DAIWA’s signature curved handle shape improves ergonomics, providing better leverage and a more comfortable grip compared to standard straight handles.

2CRBB, 1RB

Lasting 12 times longer than standard stainless steel bearings, DAIWA’s corrosion resistant ball bearings feature specially treated stainless steel and a protective shield on the bearing race that seals out sand, fine grit, salt crystals, and other abrasives. The result is a longer lasting bearing that’s protected from the corrosive elements that destroy traditional bearings.

PERFECT ROD PAIRING

PERFECT ROD PAIRING

A reel this substantial deserves a rod of equal stature. Martin says DAIWA’s ISLA AGS is an ideal match. Introduced last year, these rods sport DAIWA AGS guides, which are 40% lighter than an equivalent sized titanium guide and feature a solid carbon fiber frame construction that also improves casting distance, delivers a faster rod speed, reduces rod vibration, and imbues greater sensitivity. ISLA AGS also boasts X45 technology, where carbon sheets are layered at 45-degree angles to enhance torsional stiffness, reduce blank twist during casting, and improve energy transfer, resulting in greater casting accuracy and distance. Combined with High Volume Fiber (HVF) and Nanoplus technology, these rods are lightweight, strong, and responsive, with a fast-action blank ideal for casting heavy rigs and playing fish effectively. Martin’s top picks are the ISLAGS70MHRB and ISLAGS70HRB. MSRP $299.99
