Garth Named Director of Billfish Conservation Project

Miami, Florida – The Billfish Conservation Project (BCP), a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to protecting billfish and other pelagic species, has named veteran marine conservation leader and writer, Fred Garth, as its new executive director.

Garth is a longtime publisher and editor of marine-oriented magazines and websites, as well as the author of six books. He’s launched 14 magazines during his career, most notably Guy Harvey Magazine, which he founded with Dr. Harvey in 2010. Garth served as Editor-In-Chief until 2023.

An avid boater, scuba diver, sailor and fisherman, Garth’s lifelong love of the ocean led him into marine conservation early in his career.

“Being on and under the water all of my life instilled a desire to protect our aquatic resources,” Garth said. “It’s a passion and a calling that I’m proud to pursue.”

Billfish are under increasing pressure from illegal fishing operations from local and international fleets. Many of these vessels target the prolific waters of the Eastern Tropical Pacific, a favorite destination of anglers and scuba divers. The waters include the coastlines from Baja California south to Panama and into South America.

The BCP was co-founded in 2019 by Ozzy Delgado, Director of Operations for Pacific Fins in Guatemala and Niels Erichsen, managing partner of the resort.

“Fred and I have worked together for more than a decade,” Delgado said, “and he’s always been a dedicated proponent of marine conservation efforts in the organizations he’s supported and the articles and books he writes. We’re lucky to have him leading our non-profit with a great vision.”
