Rapala Brings Legendary Action to Soft Plastics

Every legacy has a beginning. For Rapala®, it began with namesake Lauri Rapala—a hard-working Finnish angler who, in the 1930s, relied on fishing to feed his family. Life was challenging and unforgiving, and as the saying goes, the hardest conditions demand the simplest truths.

Rapala observed that predator fish consistently targeted wounded baitfish over healthy ones. Necessity sharpened the idea. With a carving knife and various wood types, he began shaping lures by hand. Through trial, error, and observation, balsa emerged as the best material to create lifelike, wounded action.

It was light and responsive, though difficult to work with and far from the cheapest option. But there was no room for compromise. Results spoke quickly. What began as lures designed for local waters spread globally to more than 140 countries, driven by demonstrated fish-catching ability.

More than ninety years later, that same truth—that realism catches fish—guides Rapala into its next chapter. CrushCity™ soft plastics are built on the same principle, and this story remains uniquely Rapala.

CrushCity™ began the same way Rapala® has always approached making lures—by identifying a need and refusing to settle for what already existed. Soft plastics were everywhere, yet few were built with the same discipline that defined Rapala's hard baits. Entering a saturated market meant doing something different—or not doing it at all.

The starting point was collaboration. Rapala partnered with elite tournament bass angler Jacob Wheeler as both a lure designer and competitor. Wheeler brought deep, experience-driven knowledge—what worked, where soft baits failed, and what was missing. Every detail mattered. Profiles. Sizes. Colors. Most importantly, action.

Prototypes came first. Then multiple revisions. Early models were reshaped, cut apart, and rebuilt until all baits performed exactly as intended. Each bait required a specific plastic formulation to deliver the intended action without compromising durability. In some cases, different sizes of the same bait, such as The Mayor™ swimbait, required additional adjustments to achieve the desired action tied to bait length. It was this thoughtful and iterative design process that inspired the word Custom in CrushCity™ packaging. Nothing advanced without unanimous confidence. No production model reached the water until it was ready for primetime.

That standard was reinforced internally. Rapala's product development team consists of seasoned anglers who understand that fish expose weak ideas quickly. Their role wasn't to compromise Wheeler's vision—it was to enhance it and make it repeatable across the CrushCity™ lineup.

What emerged was a focused portfolio of soft baits designed primarily for bass, each built with intent. In short order, CrushCity™ accounted for more than $3 million in tournament winnings, validating the approach at the highest level of competition. That intent is evident across the lineup—from minnow-imitating profiles like the Mooch Minnow™ and Freeloader™ to The Mayor™ swimbait. Expanding beyond minnow profiles is a core lineup of creature-style and worm baits that exhibit best-in-class action.

Like Rapala's iconic balsa lures, CrushCity™ baits proved effective beyond their original target. In particular, those minnow-imitating profiles and actions began producing across species, especially in the walleye market, reinforcing a familiar truth: baits with the right attributes catch predators—period.

Completing the system is VMC, Rapala's integrated premium terminal tackle partner. Purpose-built hooks, jigheads, and rigging components serve as tailored delivery systems for CrushCity™ plastics, ensuring optimal rigging, action, hooking, and bait and fish retention across a wide range of presentations.

Like Lauri Rapala's decision to work with balsa despite its challenges, CrushCity™ cuts no corners in its pursuit of realism. Excellence wasn't the goal. It was the standard.
