The Miami Beach City Commission is considering establishing a marine protected area extending north from the Government Cut jetty past Neon Reef along South Beach, which would prohibit boats with combustion engines from accessing a historical tarpon fishery. Anglers, businesses and conservation organizations, including ASA and CCA, have formed a coalition to protest the change amid concerns about the proposal.
At a recent listening session, anglers, snorkelers and members of an ocean swimming club shared their concerns with Commission staff. Commissioner Laura Dominguez emphasized that the proposal is not intended to prohibit fishing and expressed openness to solutions that would improve swimmer and snorkeler safety while preserving recreational angling opportunities. With the proposal still in its early stages, ASA is optimistic that a compromise can be reached to accommodate the needs of all recreational users.
